Team Communication

Ask virtually any group what they need to be more effective, and they will say, “Better communication”. Always true - one could argue it is the human condition to always be trying or needing to communicate better. However, most seminars or retreats respond to this by having the work group commit to “communicating better”. I say: "Fine - how are you going to do that?" This workshop is designed to take that next step.

What are the elements of effective communication?

  • Those who need a piece of information get it in an accessible and timely manner
  • Communication styles and mediums are defined and agreed upon for various tasks and kinds of information
  • Use of e-mail is crafted with the limitations of the form in mind
  • Any necessary document trail is created efficiently

What stands in the way of effective workplace communication?

  • Personality conflicts and misunderstandings
  • Lack of clarity about when to ask or tell
  • Ineffective use of communication tools (think about how easy it is to have your e-mail tone mis-understood)
  • Different styles of imparting information

What does this workshop do?

  • Identify exactly what “good communication” means to each individual
  • Identify tracking/recordkeeping needs
  • Understand each type of communication typically used (e.g. phone, memo, e-mail)
  • Determine what kinds of communication are most effective for specific kinds of information
  • Discuss and understand verbal communication styles and differences
  • Identify who works best with which style, in delivery and receiving information
  • Personal and group commitments to agreed-upon styles

What makes this workshop different from a hundred others?

  • Highly pragmatic approach - not nebulous results that only last for two weeks
  • Extraordinary level of enthusiasm and energy
  • Teaching methods for all kinds of learners
  • Bulk of work is hands-on, dealing with problems the group identifies
  • Specific agreements and commitments made publicly helps ensure follow-through
  • Right and left brain approaches enhance absorption and retention of material
  • Makes learning fun, even for the skeptics!
